The Norwegian Fjord Centre is a thriving visitor and education hub for the West Norwegian Fjords – the only area in Norway inscribed on UNESCO’s prestigious World Heritage List for its natural significance.
You can buy your ticket to visit the West Norwegian Fjords Visitor Centre when booking your boat trip to Geiranger or other events in the World Heritage Area.
The Norwegian Fjord Centre is the visitor and education hub for the West Norwegian Fjords – Geirangerfjord World Heritage Site. The exhibitions showcase the exciting and unique fjord landscape that was granted World Heritage status by UNESCO in 2005.
It was the natural attributes of the West Norwegian Fjords that warranted their inscription on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 2005. The heritage site includes both the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord.
The heritage site incorporates a wide range of landscape formations that are associated with the innermost reaches of two of the longest and deepest fjords in the world. Many consider these fjordside areas to be the most beautiful on Earth, and the landscapes remain relatively unaffected by human activity.
We encourage you to explore the World Heritage: listen to the rush of the waterfalls, take in the scent of trees and moss. Use your eyes – perhaps you’ll catch sight of a deer at the edge of a clearing, or of porpoises playing on the fjord? Visit the fjordside farms and find traces of the people who made their living in the most incredible of places.
Exploring the World Heritage landscape on foot makes it easier to understand the importance of preserving this unique natural and cultural heritage.
Have you ever stopped to think how fantastic the World Heritage concept is – that something is so valuable that it belongs to the whole world? That it is yours and mine, and that we are all responsible for looking after it?
The Geirangerfjord World Heritage Foundation has a large and diverse task on its hands, including education and competence development designed to protect and preserve the natural heritage, and acting as a driving force for sustainable development. We seek to demonstrate environmentally friendly travel options; disseminate knowledge about the area and showcase its attributes to local and international visitors; provide an arena for site-specific academic research; and set framework conditions for various governing bodies.
How can we protect the fragile World Heritage Site whilst welcoming an increasing number of visitors? Green Fjord is a collaborative movement intended to safeguard the sustainable development of human activity within the Geirangerfjord World Heritage Site and the surrounding areas. The partnership’s ambitious vision is one of ‘leave no trace’. So far, more than 90 individuals, businesses and government agencies have signed up to the Green Fjord partnership.

Location:
Eidfjord is located in the innermost part of the famous Hardangerfjord. In May 2005 Eidfjord Cruise Port opened, and has become a famous port since the opening. The cruise port is located in the center of Eidfjord. The sail-in is stunning.
Eidfjord is lovely - you can just walk off the ship into the (very small) town. About 1000 inhabitants.
Watch a destination video.
Sightseeing:
If you like walking (nothing too strenuous) go into the tourist office close to the dock and ask for a walking guide. There is a lovely walk along the edge of the river (starts on the opposite side of the bridge from where you are berthed) up through some woodlands (little bit rough track here but mainly good tracks/very quiet roads) up to a lake.
Several of Eidfjord's attractions are within reach for those who prefer to walk. Examples include the Hæreid Viking graves (20 minutes by foot from the town center) and the Old Church (built in 1309).
Tours Excursions Transportation:
The Troll Train takes you for a 1 hour guided tour in Eidfjord on cruise call days.
The trip starts outside the tourist information office. First, you drive up to the Hereid terrace where you can see Western Norway's largest selection of graves from the iron- and Viking age. On the way back to the center there will be a 10-minute photo stop at a very nice viewpoint of the fjord and the mountains. Afterward the trip goes to the Lægreid terrace where you can view the Eidfjord Old church built in 1309 for 10-minutes. The train returns to the center.
Tickets are sold at the tourist information center.
Nearby Places:
The Vøringsfossen waterfall has for a long time been Norway's most visited natural attraction with its fall of 600 feet (183 meters). The distance from Eidfjord is 12.1 miles (or 19.5 kilometers). There are also several other waterfalls in the region – some of them even higher than the Vøringsfossen.
The Hardangervidda plateau. Well-known far beyond Norway's borders, many tourists make their way to Eidfjord in order to visit the plateau (and the Hardangerfjord, which is Norway's second longest fjord). For visitors who do not wish to go trekking in alpine climate, the Hardangervidda Natursenter is an alternative. The combined museum and visitor center give an overview of this region of Norway.
