palmOne has released a new PIM support update that covers many of the latest handhelds. In addition, the company has posted drivers for the palmOne WiFi SD card and a number of other device update including the Tungsten C and Treo Updater have been released this summer.
PIM Support Update
A new PIM support update has been released. It corrects certain incompatibilities discovered between third-party desktop Personal Information Managers (PIMs). In addition, the update includes several smaller code adjustments and solutions. The small 42 KB update is for the Tungsten E, Tungsten T3, and Zire 72 handhelds.
palmOne SD WiFi Card
palmOne is now taking online orders for the recently released SD WiFi card. The card works with the Zire 72 and T3 handhelds, you can read our full review here.
The drivers for the card have been posted online for download. The driver requires 4MB of free space to temporarily accomdate the installer and should be done on a full battery.
Tungsten C Update
If your handheld of choice is the Tungsten C, make sure you have the latest update. The Tungsten C Update 3.0 was released in late July and fixes some small issues and improves network connectivity.
Treo Updater
If your Treo 600 software version number is anything lower than 1.12, the Treo Updater is for you. The updater brings a number of performance and reliability enhancements to the smartphone.

Why?
Why would you need drivers for the WiFi Card if the drivers are already on the card???
RE: Why?
Example:The old Veo SDIO camera for Palm came with flaky drivers built into the card. Newer ones were released that offered greater stability, OS5 compatability, and better image preview quality when viewing thumbnail shots taken by the camera.
So while not essential, the updated drivers allowed for better functionality, just like 99% of all other driver updates in the computer biz.
For the wi-fi card, I would imaging that improved power management, handling of multiple networks, and general stability all have been improved upon. Although it's not clear if the drivers posted are updated ones or just the same ones found on the card. Gemerally PalmOne doesn't do things redundantly so I am assuming that these are slightly updated. The Thinkoutside keyboards get 2x or 3x new driver releases a year just to help out with stability and new model compatability. Driver support from the manufacturer is usually a good thing IMHO!
RE: Why?
the drivers are not included on the SD card, you must install them via hotsync first.-Ryan
RE: Why?
Also, I may have gotten a bad disc in my package; I had to download the drivers because my CD showed up as blank!
RE: Why?
red five -1. where did you buy the card?
2. how is the wi-fi performance?
RE: Why?
I got the card this weekend at the new PalmOne store in the Atlanta airport, as I flew through it. It's in Terminal T.The performance is definitely better than BT, though I don't yet have any objective measurements. It is certainly a battery hog, though. Keep a power source nearby.

Data Manager Patch?
Does this address the issues with the Datamanager patch? Does this mean that I finally don't have to battle to keep my DateBk5 in sync with the the world, and don't have to wake up to an alarm at midnight of August 31st, telling me it's my wife's birthday (which is actually in May?)

RE: Data Manager Patch?
Definitely not and I can not tell you how disappointed I am.I am a DB5 user as well and it kills me that I have this powerful PDA and my most frequently used program continues to be hobbled (speedwise) by a software glitch.
It seems to me that PalmOne could solve this problem one of two ways: (1) release a patch to address the problem or (2) release detailed information on the structure of the new PIMs so that programmers like CESD can deal directly with the bug (as the PalmOne programmers apparently have since the built-in Calendar does not have the problems that DB5 and Agendus have on the T3). I note that the problem, apparently, does not exist on the Zire 72.

RE: Data Manager Patch?
I have a T3 and use DateBk5 with no problems. Haven't bypassed the data manager or anything. I've added the data manager patch, and have not noticed any decrease in speed.Mike

RE: PIM Support Update
I installed the PIM update on my Z71. No, it doesn't do anything front-end like update the PIMs to the cool new ones released right after the Z71. :} It's all backend, and minor at that. Can't say as I noticed any difference at all. Perhaps I'm not using the right third-party stuff to generate the conflict in the first place?RE: PIM Support Update
I really like the new Today page on OS 5.2.1 so I asked Palm. They said that the 'display was matched to the model.' Why can't they just say 'No, Sorry' instead BS? It would have been very easy to release a ROM update to give those of us who just missed it, the nicer GUI, wouldn't it? Such little things go a long way on the service end.Anyway, enough venting for today,

Sketchy Details
Does anyone know what this does/doesn't do?P1 have very sketchy details on their site. It seems a shame that they have spent time/money on the development to fix issues without 'advertising' what it is they are fixing. How can the user base be satisfied with P1 if we don't know what P1 is doing to support us?

RE: Sketchy Details
HiI am also wondering why they have nothing like a 'real' release note telling us what the update does. If somebody finds this kind of information please tell, too :-).

RE: Sketchy Details
I think that after seeing the debacle of the OS 4.1 upgrade for units running 4.0 back in '02, PalmOne's gonna be very, very relucant to offer any 5.x or 6.x upgrades in the near future. They just want us to buy a new handheld every time, simple as that. Just imagine how well a Zire 71 would continue to suit most users if an upgrade to 5.2.8 and the new Media app were made available for download, even at a fee. Instead to get those capabilities you have to go with the peeling, non-UC Z72.
About the only thing I won't rule out would be an OS6 upgrade for the T3 & TC *IF* a Cobalt unit launches this fall. If it doesn't, then P1 will just figure that by spring '05 when the first Cobalt models appear, the T3 & TC will be so 'old' that everyone will be ready for a brand spankin' new handheld or, better yet, a Treo.
It provides VPN Support
I installed the WiFi drivers on my T3 in anticipation of getting the WiFi card soon (call me eager)...and the driver actually includes VPN support. I can actually use the VPN connection with the bluetooth in my desktop PC....so in short, the drivers may be useful for some who are not even getting the WiFi card.RE: It provides VPN Support
Oh now that's pretty slick. I wonder if VPN support will be built into the next OS...Until I feel like spending the money on the WiFi card for the Tungsten, I'm going to just have to use my Thinkpad X40 on rogue networks, like I am now. :P

Palm WiFi Card = Sandisk ?
I look carefully the Palm Wifi SD Card and the Sandisk Wifi SD Card (the one without the memory), they look very very similar except that the price of Palm card is really expensive compare the the Sandisk price. It look like Palm has a contract with Sandisk to make their cards...My question is : will Palm wifi drivers work with the Sandisk cards ? Did someone try to put a Sandisk Wifi card inside is palm to test it ?

RE: Palm WiFi Card = Sandisk ?
Thank you for this good information , I try to find a Sandisk Wifi SD card to make test and if it work I will buy one because the price is really good compare the the PalmOne price , I have seen the Sandisk nearly half the price of the PalmOne.RE: Palm WiFi Card = Sandisk ?
RE: Palm WiFi Card = Sandisk ?
Ryan already tried this last month. He stated that it didn't work in a response to someone's comments under Ryan's P1 wi-fi card review. A shame, too as the Sandisk is more readily available than to P1 card-not to be mention a few $ cheaper.Eston Driver Download Pc
Supposedly, the P1 card is of a special low power consumption design so as to minimize battery life. Of course, in a power-sucking OS5 model, fretting over a few minutes of reduced battery life is like splitting hairs.

I can't find this anywhere on http://palmone.com/. Can someone post a direct link?

intermittant bug after upgrade
Has anyone had any problems since installing the PIM update?I have started getting an intermittant problem on my Tungsten E where the digitiser is not correctly identifying the pen's location and the 'home button' starts the world clock application rather than going to the app launcher.
I can work around the problem by removing and reinserting the flash memory card. This then forces the application launcher to start (showing the memory card) and the digitiser then behaves again.
This has only started recently - since I installed the PIM update. Doesn't inspire confidence in the update...
